And a lot’s being said about vaping and its effects – but there’s also some confusing or conflicting info out there. As of April 1, 2024, 1,061 municipalities, plus 26 states, commonwealths, and territories restrict e-cigarette use in 100% smokefree venues. Experts are questioning whether punishment is an effective deterrent to nicotine use in the first place. How many students have been caught at the Houston area’s largest school districts?

The difference in opinion worldwide may be due to different restrictions imposed. For example, while no more than 20 ng/mL of nicotine is allowed in the EU, e-liquids with 59 mg/dL are currently available in the United States. Nevertheless, despite the national restrictions, users can easily access foreign or even counterfeit products online. Electronic nicotine dispensing systems (ENDS), commonly known as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, have been popularly considered a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarette smoking since they first appeared on the market more than a decade ago. E-cigarettes are electronic devices, essentially consisting of a cartridge, filled with an e-liquid, a heating element/atomiser necessary to heat the e-liquid to create a vapour that can be inhaled through a mouthpiece, and a rechargeable battery (Fig. 1) [1, 2]. Both the electronic devices and the different e-liquids are easily available in shops or online stores.
The study, one of the largest to date looking at the relationship between e-cigarette use and cardiovascular and other health outcomes and among the first to establish an association. The findings were spotlighted in a Popular Science article, which referenced another study led by Paul Ndunda, M.D., also an assistant professor in Internal Medicine at KU School of Medicine-Wichita. “Until now, little has been known about cardiovascular events relative to e-cigarette use,” Dr. Vindhyal, assistant professor in Internal Medicine at KU School of Medicine-Wichita, stated in the ACC release. “These data are a real wake-up call and should prompt more action and awareness about the dangers of e-cigarettes.”
During the physical exam, your doctor will use a stethoscope to listen to your lungs, check your heartrate, and measure your blood oxygen saturation using a pulse oximeter. A chest X-ray or computed tomography (CT) scan is usually necessary for diagnosis and will show hazy looking spots (called opacities) in the lungs. The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine concluded there is “substantial evidence” that if a youth or young adult uses an e-cigarette, they are at increased risk of using traditional cigarettes.
The researchers studied human endothelial cells generated in the laboratory from what are called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells. IPS cells can become many different cell types, and they provide an ideal way for researchers to closely study cells that would be difficult to isolate directly from a patient. That makes vaping them especially likely to cause negative side effects or long-term health problems. Rigotti noted that some studies indicate that as many as half of those who vape are attempting to quit every year but a lot of them are having trouble. While there is research suggesting the benefits of text messaging programs and behavioral support, as well as stories of the effectiveness of varenicline (Chantix) for vaping cessation, Rigotti noted there is no data to prove that these are effective. Sward points out that according to the FDA, there’s no evidence any e-cigarette is safe and effective at helping smokers quit. She suggests talking to your doctor about medications and other strategies that are proven stop-smoking tools.
Most, but not all, of these associations held true when controlling for other known cardiovascular risk factors, such as age, sex, body mass index, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and smoking. After adjusting for these variables, e-cigarette users were 34 percent more likely to have a heart attack, 25 percent more likely to have coronary artery disease and 55 percent more likely to suffer from depression or anxiety, the release states. Stroke, high blood pressure and circulatory problems were no longer statistically different between the two groups.
The nicotine content of the liquid can range from “very high” to zero. Refills come in flavors such as cool cucumber, mango, and mint, which may seem natural and harmless, but a single JUUL refill contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 cigarettes. Some of the ingredients in e-cigarettes could also be harmful to the lungs in the long-term.
The availability of “vape wear,” such as backpacks and hoodies, also allow the user to vape while concealing the product. Most have a battery, heating element, and place to hold a liquid, usually containing highly addictive nicotine, that is added or included in the device. The heating element aerosolizes the liquid for the inhalation of the liquid nicotine or other substance.
In addition, the research team delivered increasing concentrations of the nicotine over time, from 1% to 2.5%, to 5%. Another potential risk in studies of this type is the use of nonallocated products. As in previous studies, a much higher proportion of participants in the EC arm than in the other arms continued to use their product throughout the study period (63% vs 0%). The key question about long-term switching from smoking to EC use is whether this is a positive or a negative outcome.

The warning letters were issued to Elf Bar, Esco Bar, Funky Republic, Hyde, Kang, Cali Bars, Lost Mary, and other e-cigarette retailers. The warning letters cite the vape companies for selling unauthorized disposable e-cigarettes. A “purchase attempt” occurred when a researcher was able to add a flavored e-cigarette product to their cart, make it through the age verification system – if any – and provide their credit card information. There are trace components of tobacco-specific nitrosamines and things that are harmful, but it’s still much, much lower than chewing tobacco, for example.

Currently, e-cigarettes are not mentioned in the Illinois Smoke-free Illinois Act, which prohibits smoking in virtually all public places and workplaces, but some local ordinances do include e-cigarettes. E-cigarette aerosol is not harmless; it can contain harmful and potentially harmful substances, including nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals. While e-cigarettes typically have fewer chemicals than regular cigarettes, researchers found e-cigarettes present their own unique health risks and can increase the odds of chronic cough, phlegm, bronchitis, and asthma. Some cigarette smokers have replaced traditional smoking with electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) or vaping, thinking it is not as dangerous.
United States federal law does not allow the sale of tobacco products to people under the age of 21. However, a major concern about vaping is its attraction for young people. These data overall indicate that the harmful effects of nicotine should not be underestimated. Despite the established regulations, some inaccuracies in nicotine content labelling remain in different brands of e-liquids. Consequently, stricter regulation and a higher quality control in the e-liquid industry are required.
There is an urgent, overdue need for standardized processes for the disposal of e-cigarette devices, refills and e-liquids. Waste management and hazardous waste disposal plants are not currently equipped to handle e-cigarette waste and federal regulations still have not caught up to the need for guidance on disposal of these types of small electronics containing toxic waste. Federal, state, and/or local governments need to set clear standards on environmentally responsible e-cigarette waste disposal and hold the industry accountable for adhering to them. E-cigarettes not only pose substantial health risks to youth and young adults, they pose a significant environmental threat (see the Truth Initiative fact sheet on Tobacco and the Environment).
EVALI is a serious medical condition in which a person’s lungs become damaged from substances contained in e-cigarettes and vaping products. E-cigarettes invite harmful and unknown chemicals into the body and bloodstream. These cancer-causing agents reach deep into the lungs, irritating the bronchi and cause an increase in blood pressure, heart rate, as well as compromise adequate flow of blood to the heart and restrict of the arteries. Juul is probably the most popular brand of e-cigarette currently marketed. The device heats a nicotine-containing liquid pod to produce an aerosol inhaled by the user and any bystander within its radius (in the form of secondhand “smoke”). All Juul e-cigarettes have a high level of nicotine and in fact, according to the manufacturer, a single Juul pod contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 regular cigarettes.

Scientists are still learning about the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes. CDC continues to recommend that people should not use e-cigarette, or vaping, products that contain THC, particularly from informal sources like friends, or family, or in-person or online dealers. In summary, it seems that either smoking or nicotine vaping may adversely impact on COVID-19 outcome.
In recognition of these and other risks related to e-cigarettes, the U.S. surgeon general issued an advisory on e-cigarette use among youth, urging parents, teachers, health professionals and states to take action to stop the epidemic among youth. The CDC has recommended that those who use e-cigarettes consider quitting and that children and women who are pregnant should not use e-cigarettes. For those who use e-cigarettes and experience similar symptoms CDC recommends seeking prompt medical care. It is important to note that the CDC has not conclusively determined the cause of the EVALI illnesses and researchers are not sure what combination of short-term, long-term or repeated exposure may contribute to lung injury. The recent outbreak of vaping related lung injuries also supports caution with respect to e-cigarettes.
Nicotine is the primary agent in regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and it is highly addictive. It causes you to crave a smoke and suffer withdrawal symptoms if you ignore the craving. It raises your blood pressure and spikes your adrenaline, which increases your heart rate and the likelihood of having a heart attack. First, it relied on self-reported data, which introduces the potential for misclassification or recall bias. In addition, social desirability and recall bias may have resulted in underreporting of both e-cigarette use and smoking status. It is important to note that these data provide a snapshot of e-cigarette use specifically in 2021, and assessing the overall impact of the entire COVID-19 pandemic on e-cigarette use presents challenges.

Second, we reported the distribution of the primarily used e-cigarette flavor before and after the ban with paired t-tests to evaluate the differences. The heating element aerosolizes the liquid for the inhalation of the liquid nicotine or other contents. E-cigarettes are known by many different names, including “vapes,” “e-cigs,” “puff bars,” and “electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).” Since e-cigarettes are a relatively new product, there is still a lot of research needed to be done on the long-term health effects. While studies have shown that e-cigarette aerosol is less harmful than traditional tobacco smoke, that does not mean that it is safe.
However, FDA enforcement efforts have had little effect on reducing teen vaping, according to recent data. “Cytisinicline has been shown in clinical trials to be effective and safe to help adults stop smoking cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are part of a category of products called Electronic Smoking Devices (ESDs), which are designed to mimic combustible tobacco cigarettes and, in most cases, contain varying levels of nicotine. Keep people safe from potentially harmful drugs, medical devices and procedures by informing them of medical conditions, severe side effects and ways to take action. After the e-cigarette lung injury outbreak, certain states and cities made the decision to ban or restrict Juul and other vaping products. The inhalation of harmful chemicals can cause irreversible lung damage and lung diseases. This study examined the impact on adult e-cigarette users from the recent e-cigarette-only flavor bans in Washington State, New Jersey, and New York. We found that most respondents continued to use e-cigarettes with banned flavors post-ban and obtain banned-flavor e-cigarettes through legal channels. Enforcing compliance of retailers to the policy is crucial to control e-cigarette use. First, we depicted the characteristics of respondents from the three states with chi-square tests to evaluate demographic differences by state and the distribution of respondents by their tobacco and nicotine use status.
Side effects are usually easily managed and should not stop you from vaping as a way to quit smoking. Most of the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, including tar and carbon monoxide, are not contained in vape aerosol. Evidence shows that vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking. Vaping exposes users to far fewer toxins and at lower levels than smoking cigarettes. You’re roughly twice as likely to quit smoking if you use a nicotine vape compared with other nicotine replacement products, like patches or gum. The routines and rituals of smoking can be hard to stop, so vaping can help you gradually let go of these while immediately reducing the health risks of smoking cigarettes.
Adults who report puffing e-cigarettes, or vaping, are significantly more likely to have a heart attack, coronary artery disease and depression compared with those who don’t use them or any tobacco products, according to the study findings. The vapor produced by e-cigarettes usually contains nicotine, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals), and in some cases, flavoring linked to serious lung disease. These and other harmful substances present in e-cigarette vapor can negatively affect the respiratory health of users. E-cigarettes are the most popular tobacco product among youth, with about one in five high school students using e-cigarettes in 2020. Youth and young adults are widely exposed to e-cigarette marketing and have high awareness of the products. Among middle and high school students who reported contact with a potential source of tobacco advertising in 2019, such as going to a convenience store or gas station, watching television lost vape centaurus quest, or reading magazines, nearly 70% (69.3%) were exposed to e-cigarette marketing.

In response to this issue, the PACT Act Amendment prohibits sellers from using the U.S. Post Office to ship e-cigarettes, vapes, flavored and smokeless tobacco products. The PACT Act applies to all shipments in interstate commerce (15 U.S.C. § 376) as well as to all delivery sales. While e-cigarettes are often marketed as a way for adults to quit nicotine, a whole new generation of non-smokers is now taking to the habit in young adulthood.
Law enforcement officers need to understand the value of collecting e-cigarette and vaping paraphernalia as evidence. Varenicline, perhaps better known by the brand name Chantix, is FDA-approved to help adults to stop smoking traditional cigarettes. But, despite the growing numbers of people who use e-cigarettes, there are no approved medication options to help them to stop using e-cigarettes. It made sense – Altria, the bad actor formerly known as Philip Morris, maker of Marlboro cigarettes, owned a 35% stake in JUUL. With so many adults kicking the cigarette smoking habit, Altria was looking for ways to sustain its financial stability. A French study from the same year found similar results, but also it found that e-cig use among smokers increased the risk of relapse into tobacco use.
Tobacco and vaping devices contain nicotine, an ingredient that can lead to addiction, which is why so many people who smoke or vape find it difficult to quit. Both tobacco and vaping devices contain other harmful chemicals; burning tobacco can create these chemicals and vaping devices turn chemicals and flavorings into mist that combines with synthetic nicotine. First, we did not collect detailed information on respondents’ use of other types of tobacco products both before and after the ban.
For example, in a previous large trial comparing EC and NRT conducted within the stop-smoking services in the UK,13 75% of the participants had tried treatment with NRT in the past. This raises a concern that the results of EC comparisons with other treatments may apply only to smokers who did not experience results with the alternative treatments in the past. This study replicated the previous findings of ECs being more effective than NRT despite only 3% of participants having had tried treatment with NRT before. There is no good evidence that second-hand vapour from e-cigarettes is harmful. As vaping is still relatively new, we can’t be sure there aren’t any long-term effects to people who breathe in someone else’s vapour. E-cigarettes should only be used to help you stop smoking, or to stop you going back to tobacco.
Nicotine gum was selected as the most widely used form of NRT in China. Three boxes containing 105 pieces of the gum each were provided at each monthly contact, with an option to request additional supplies if needed. Smoking causes at least 15 different types of cancer so stopping smoking completely is the best thing you can do for your health.
Whilst long-term health effects are not fully known, we do know that they generate toxic substances, some of which are known to cause cancer and some that increase the risk of heart and lung disorders. Electronic delivery systems have also been linked to a number of physical injuries, including burns from explosions or malfunctions, when the products are not of the expected standard or are tampered with by users. The use of e-cigarettes is unsafe for kids, teens, and young adults.
E-cigarettes are not currently available from the NHS on prescription, so you cannot get one from your GP. If you’re pregnant, licensed NRT products such as patches and gum are the recommended option to help you stop smoking. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) has been widely used for many years to help people stop smoking and is a safe treatment.
