About one-quarter of U.S. youth and young adults have ever tried e-cigarettes. While vaping might help you quit smoking, it probably won’t help you quit nicotine altogether. Some damage to your lungs from vaping can heal or get better with medications. Over time, constant irritation to your lungs can lead to health problems (like asthma and COPD) that won’t go away. ENDS may be manufactured to look like conventional combusted cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. Larger devices, such as tank systems or mods, bear little or no resemblance to cigarettes.
On this webpage, these products are collectively referred to as e-cigarettes. The long-term health effects of e-cigarettes are not well understood yet. But the science clearly indicates vaping is not a safe or healthy alternative to smoking. We’ll continue to support research into the health consequences of this and other tobacco product trends that aim to appeal to a new generation of users. New York State has enacted strong policies to protect youth from accessing tobacco products and denormalize tobacco and nicotine use to prevent lifelong addiction, illness, and early death. Policies include banning the sale of flavored vapor products, ending price discounts on tobacco and vapor products, and banning the exterior display of tobacco and vapor product ads near schools.
E-cigarettes are devices that use batteries and a heating element to turn flavored liquids into a vapor that can be inhaled. Often marketed as a safer alternative to tobacco cigarettes, virtually all vaping liquids contain highly addictive nicotine. E-cigs, including Juul, have been linked to seizures and other serious side effects.
Side effects are usually easily managed and should not stop you from vaping as a way to quit smoking. Most of the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, including tar and carbon monoxide, are not contained in vape aerosol. Evidence shows that vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking. Vaping exposes users to far fewer toxins and at lower levels than smoking cigarettes. You’re roughly twice as likely to quit smoking if you use a nicotine vape compared with other nicotine replacement products, like patches or gum. The routines and rituals of smoking can be hard to stop, so vaping can help you gradually let go of these while immediately reducing the health risks of smoking cigarettes.
E-cigarettes are also called e-cigs, vape pens, vapes, mods, and other terms. If at any point you feel at risk of going back to smoking, increase your nicotine strength or vaping frequency until the feelings go away. Only reduce your vaping frequency or nicotine strength when you feel you will not go back to smoking and do not have to puff more to compensate. Recently, a study observed more than 6,000 teenagers between the ages of 12 and 15 to determine if e-cigarettes are increasing the odds for teen smoking. What was found was that e-cigarettes were the premiere choice for those who chose to smoke and once they began, they also moved on to traditional cigarettes. In 2019, IQOS — produced by Philip Morris International — became the first tobacco heating system authorized by the FDA to be marketed and sold in the U.S. Although manufacturers claim that heating tobacco is less harmful than traditional cigarettes, current data on health effects of these devices are sparse and most of what has been published has been by tobacco industry scientists. In this line, a study compared the acute impact of CS vs. e-cigarette vaping with equivalent nicotine content in healthy smokers and non-smokers.

Even e-cigarettes that claim to have no nicotine have been found to contain nicotine. For example, some Juul pods contain more nicotine than many other e-cigarettes. Research is mixed on whether vaping is safer than smoking, and e-cigs like Juul are so new that not a lot of research has been done. “Our finding indicates that health care expenditures for a person who uses e-cigarettes are $2,024 more per year than for a person who doesn’t use any tobacco products,” said lead author Yingning Wang, PhD, of the UCSF Institute for Health & Aging. Clearly the dangers extend beyond what is being done to the lungs and heart. Adults who used e-cigarettes at least once a week before the flavor bans were recruited online. Respondents reported their e-cigarette use ijoy bar 8000, primarily used flavor, and ways of obtaining e-cigarettes before and after the bans.
According to Blaha, there are three reasons e-cigarettes may be particularly enticing to young people. Second, e-cigarettes have a lower per-use cost than traditional cigarettes. Among youth, e-cigarettes, especially the disposable kind, are more popular than any traditional tobacco product.

This toolkit also refers to commercial tobacco products, which are the products tobacco manufacturers and retailers sell. Commercial tobacco is different from the traditional or sacred tobacco, also known as Cansasa, Asemaa, or Kinnikinnick, and which are used by American Indian communities for sacred purposes.
But if online vendors either flout or are unaware of these laws, young people may still have access to flavored tobacco products. Currently, MRTP marketing claims are not effective in convincing people who smoke that the products are less harmful than cigarettes. In one study, our team looked at the marketing claims used by two FDA-authorized MRTPs, and found that only 1 in 4 people who smoke cigarettes believe that a product with MRTP claims is much less harmful or addictive than cigarettes. This misconception can stop people from considering a switch to lower-risk tobacco products.
Symptoms include vomiting, rapid heart rate, unsteadiness and increased salivation. The comprehensive review of the evidence finds that almost all of the 2.6 million adults using e-cigarettes in Great Britain are current or ex-smokers, most of whom are using the devices to help them quit smoking or to prevent them going back to cigarettes. It also provides reassurance that very few adults and young people who have never smoked are becoming regular e-cigarette users (less than 1% in each group). Youth use of e-cigarettes has surpassed youth use of regular combustible cigarettes in Delaware. The bills are meant to put some teeth into a law signed by Gov. Phil Murphy in 2020 that made New Jersey the first state to ban flavored vaping liquids that are especially popular among young people.
However, additional follow up studies are required in COVID-19 pandemic to clarify the effect of e-cigarette use on lung and cardiovascular complications derived from SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this particular aspect, again the composition of the e-liquid varies significantly among different commercial brands [4, 35]. The most common and major components of e-liquids are PG or 1,2-propanediol, and glycerol or glycerine (propane-1,2,3-triol). Both types of compounds are used as humectants to prevent the e-liquid from drying out [2, 53] and are classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as “Generally Recognised as Safe” [54].
The difference in opinion worldwide may be due to different restrictions imposed. For example, while no more than 20 ng/mL of nicotine is allowed in the EU, e-liquids with 59 mg/dL are currently available in the United States. Nevertheless, despite the national restrictions, users can easily access foreign or even counterfeit products online. Electronic nicotine dispensing systems (ENDS), commonly known as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, have been popularly considered a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarette smoking since they first appeared on the market more than a decade ago. E-cigarettes are electronic devices, essentially consisting of a cartridge, filled with an e-liquid, a heating element/atomiser necessary to heat the e-liquid to create a vapour that can be inhaled through a mouthpiece, and a rechargeable battery (Fig. 1) [1, 2]. Both the electronic devices and the different e-liquids are easily available in shops or online stores.
It may take some experimentation with different products and e-liquids to find the right one. With nicotine-containing products, vaping may be safer than smoking. It involves fewer hazardous chemicals and results in less lung damage.
It now appears that e-cigarettes may present their own unique health risks, including to the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Given the products’ relatively recent introduction to the marketplace, further research is needed to evaluate the short and long term health impacts of e-cigarettes. The harms of e-cigarette use in young people include not only the deleterious effects of nicotine, but also exposure of the lungs and airways to potentially toxic solvents and flavoring chemicals.
According to the 2017 NH Youth Risk Behavior Survey, e-cigarette among youth is double that of combustible cigarettes and more than a third of 12th grade males report currently using e-cigarettes.
