Nicotine levels in e-cigarettes are highly variable, with some reaching or exceeding levels found in combustible cigarettes. The age-standardized prevalence of current e-cigarette use among individuals who reported never using combustible cigarettes was 2.9% (95% CI, 2.8%-3.1%). The prevalence was higher among individuals who reported former combustible cigarette use, at 17.2% (95% CI, 16.5%-18.0%), and current combustible cigarette use, at 17.9% (95% CI, 17.1%-18.7%). The age-standardized prevalence of daily e-cigarette use by smoking status showed similar patterns (Table 2). In a recent study, about 18% of people who switched to vaping had been able to quit smoking. That’s about twice as many people as those who used other methods to quit smoking. Of people who used other methods, 91% kicked nicotine products altogether.
It may take some experimentation with different products and e-liquids to find the right one. With nicotine-containing products, vaping may be safer than smoking. It involves fewer hazardous chemicals and results in less lung damage.
However, study authors themselves caution that leaving both mint and menthol on the market undermines the purpose of removing flavors — which is to prevent kids from using e-cigarettes at all. Consumers need to consistently know what they are getting and whether it is safe — particularly from a product designed to deliver chemicals by frequent inhalation. The growing evidence of potential health risks and lung injuries related to e-cigarette use has led researchers to question whether e-cigarettes are safer than combustible cigarettes. This does not necessarily mean, however, that e-cigarettes are free from hazardous effects. Indeed, studies investigating their long-term effects on human health are urgently required. Other important components in the aerosols include silicate particles from the fiberglass wicks or silicone [89,90,91]. Many of these products are known to cause abnormalities in respiratory function and respiratory diseases [89,90,91], but more in-depth studies are required. Despite making great strides to reduce smoking, tobacco is still our biggest killer. Our region has always kept an open mind towards using electronic cigarettes as we can see the massive potential health benefits from switching. The scientists investigated the effect of the e-liquids on cells called endothelial cells that line the interior of blood vessels. They found that, when grown in a laboratory, endothelial cells exposed to the e-liquids — or to blood collected from e-cigarette users shortly after vaping — are less viable and exhibit significantly increased levels of molecules implicated in DNA damage and cell death. The cells are also less able to form new vascular tubes and to migrate and participate in wound healing. Overall, comparisons of the particle-size distribution in aerosols from e-cigarettes found that the substances tested had particle distributions similar to the traditional e-liquids containing nicotine.
The study led by Dr. Vindhyal included data from a total of 96,467 respondents from the National Health Interview Survey, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-fielded survey of Americans, from 2014, 2016 and 2017. In their analyses, researchers looked at the rates of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, coronary artery disease, diabetes and depression/anxiety among those who reported using e-cigarettes (either some days or daily) and nonusers. In May 2015, Oregon expanded the Oregon Indoor Clean Air Act (ICAA) to include the use of “inhalant delivery systems,” which include e-cigarettes, vape pens, e-hookah and other devices. Under the law, Oregonians may not use e-cigarettes and other inhalant delivery systems in workplaces, restaurants, bars and other indoor public places in Oregon. Instead of smoke from burning tobacco, e-cigarette users inhale aerosol, or vapor, consisting of nicotine, flavor additives and other chemicals. We have validated a simple, cheap and effective system for condensing vaped ECL vapour to enable in vitro work.
Using e-cigarettes, or “vaping,” are terms used synonymously to refer to the use of a wide variety of electronic, battery-operated devices that aerosolize, but do not burn, liquids to release nicotine and other substances. Nicotine-containing e-cigarettes are regulated as “tobacco products” by the FDA because the nicotine is derived from the tobacco plant. E-cigarettes pose a threat to the health of users and the harms are becoming increasingly apparent. In the past few years, the use of these products has increased at an alarming rate among young people in significant part because the newest, re-engineered generation of e-cigarettes more effectively delivers large amounts of nicotine to the brain. The comprehensive review of the evidence finds that almost all of the 2.6 million adults using e-cigarettes in Great Britain are current or ex-smokers, most of whom are using the devices to help them quit smoking or to prevent them going back to cigarettes. It also provides reassurance that very few adults and young people who have never smoked are becoming regular e-cigarette users (less than 1% in each group). Youth use of e-cigarettes has surpassed youth use of regular combustible cigarettes in Delaware. Approximately 38 percent of Delaware high school students reported ever trying an electronic vapor product. E-cigarettes, which arrived in the United States around 2007, were originally intended for adults as a way to quit smoking traditional or “combustible” cigarettes.

You have an important part to play when it comes to talking to kids about the harms of e-cigarettes. Although secondhand vapor may not affect the lungs the same way as vaping, it is better to avoid it, if possible.
Finally, we estimated the age-standardized prevalence of e-cigarette use by state, allowing for comparisons while adjusting for variations in age distribution. Chronic health conditions assessed included cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer (excluding skin cancer) sensor de tpms, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (yes or no), and depression (yes or no). Continuous and rigorous implementation of traditional tobacco control measures, such as taxation, clean indoor air policies and public education is also essential. Finally, the recent news of vaping-related illnesses requires swift research and effective guidance to protect the public’s health. In addition to the unknown health effects, early evidence suggests that vaping might serve as an introductory product for preteens and teens who then go on to use other nicotine products, including cigarettes, which are known to cause disease and premature death.
Together, these three categories accounted for almost two thirds of expenditures in 2021. In 2017, the campaign began prioritizing e-cigarette prevention messaging to combat increasing youth vaping rates. “The Real Cost” campaign also educates teens on the health consequences of smoking cigarettes. Vaping involves using a device known as an e-cigarette—also called a vape pen, mod, or tank—to heat up a small amount of liquid, turning it into a vapor that can be inhaled. Most vape liquids contain substances such as propylene glycol and glycerol as base ingredients that create the vapor. But they may also contain other compounds including artificial flavors, nicotine, THC, and cannabinoid (CBD) oil.
No use of any of the study products was recorded in the varenicline and NRT arms after the initial 3 months. Ratings of helpfulness of the products in assisting participants in stopping smoking mirrored the efficacy outcomes, with NRT rated as less helpful than ECs and varenicline, and EC and varenicline rated as similarly helpful (eTable 5 in Supplement 2). Participants in all 3 study arms were invited to join a self-help forum set up for the trial participants on WeChat, a messaging app. This was to share their experience with stopping smoking and provide mutual support via text messages.

More adults 18 to 24 years old used e-cigarettes (11.0%, or roughly 3.4 million people) compared with adults 25 to 44 (6.5%) or 45 and older (2.0%). Promoted as a “satisfying alternative to cigarettes,” JUUL is putting a new generation of youth at risk of nicotine dependence and future cigarette use.
In e-cigarettes, tobacco combustion is replaced by e-liquid heating, leading some manufacturers to propose that e-cigarettes have less harmful respiratory effects than tobacco consumption. Other innovative features such as the adjustment of nicotine content and the choice of pleasant flavours have won over many users. Nevertheless, the safety of e-cigarette consumption and its potential as a smoking cessation method remain controversial due to limited evidence. Moreover, it has been reported that the heating process itself can lead to the formation of new decomposition compounds of questionable toxicity.
Furthermore, some argue that “vaping” can be a gateway to regular cigarettes. Some e-cigarettes are made to look like regular tobacco products or may resemble pens, USB sticks, and other everyday items. Given their elusive casing, it makes them easy to conceal or identify, allowing teens to use them at home and in schools as well as a vehicle for marijuana and other drugs. A complete flavor ban (i.e., ban all added flavors) and enforcing compliance of retailers to the policy is crucial to control e-cigarette use.
Validated 7-day point prevalence abstinence rates were affected less, and effect sizes for all outcomes were close to those predicted, but the lower quit rates have reduced the statistical power for the primary outcome. Another key limitation of open-label trials is that participants’ expectations can affect outcomes. The most recent evidence suggests that e-cigarettes may pose their own unique health harms and that comparison to cigarettes may not be the only relevant question for determining their impact on individual health. Indeed, the growing evidence of potential health risks related to e-cigarette use has led some researchers to question whether e-cigarettes are safer than combustible cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is the name given to a group of battery-operated tobacco products that allow users to inhale aerosolized liquid (e-juice) containing nicotine and other substances. While their manufacturers say they are an alternative for tobacco smokers who want to avoid inhaling smoke, critics say too little is known about the safety of ESDs because they are not regulated. E-cigarettes are sometimes called e-cigs, vapes, e-hookahs, vape pens and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).
The rapid uptake of e-cigarettes (also known as vapes or vaping devices) has reversed a trend of declining teen commercial tobacco use in Minnesota. Not only does the use of these products increase the risk for addiction, but it may also worsen chronic health conditions, like asthma, which puts students at risk of increased absenteeism and lower academic performance. Many people believe electronic cigarettes (also called e-cigarettes or vapes) are a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes. But with a recent report from the U.S. surgeon general calling e-cigarette use “a major public health concern,” this may not be the case.
For one, our protocol for the study was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the health and safety of our team in mind, we avoided in-person interactions. This means that we did not receive the package of flavored e-cigarettes from a delivery person. A comprehensive evaluation of SB 793 compliance among brands and vendors that sell their products online in California would help determine the extent to which flavored e-cigarettes are still available. This research would provide data on retailer awareness of the new legislation and would show whether they understand the potential consequences for being in violation of the new law. E-cigarette use among adolescents is a public health concern, particularly since these products have a special appeal to young people.
Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the deleterious effects of battery output voltage are not comparable to those exerted by CS extracts [30] (Figs. 1 and 2). With regards to toxicity, little is known about the effects of humectants when they are heated and chronically inhaled. Studies have indicated that PG can induce respiratory irritation and increase the probability of asthma development [55, 56], and both PG and glycerol from e-cigarettes might reach concentrations sufficiently high to potentially cause irritation of the airways [57]. Indeed, the latter study established that one e-cigarette puff results in a PG exposure of 430–603 mg/m3, which is higher than the levels reported to cause airway irritation (average 309 mg/m3) based on a human study [55]. The same study established that one e-cigarette puff results in a glycerol exposure of 348–495 mg/m3 [57], which is close to the levels reported to cause airway irritation in rats (662 mg/m3) [58].
Vaping nicotine has not been thoroughly evaluated in scientific studies. For now, not enough data exists on the safety of e-cigarettes, how the health effects compare to traditional cigarettes, and if they are helpful for people trying to quit smoking. The FDA monitors the national usage rates for all tobacco products, including an annual youth survey, and has seen a drastic increase in youth use of e-cigarette products in recent years. Due to what has been called an ‘epidemic’ of youth use of these products, FDA has prioritized prevention efforts.
E-cigarette use has increased 78 percent in one year for high schoolers and 48 percent in middle schoolers. Additionally, the CDC reports nearly 38 percent of all high schoolers and even 13 percent of middle schoolers have tried “vaping” at least once, and those statistics likely are underreported. Drawn to the fruity flavor cartridges, or trying to wean from traditional tobacco products, or even to curtail hunger, many people believe e-cigarettes or “vaping” is safer than smoking cigarettes and simply not addictive. As shown in Table 1, the majority of the 1624 respondents were males (61.2%), young adults between 25 and 34 years old (56.9%), Whites (59.4%), and had at least a bachelor’s degree (66.8%). The majority of respondents had used e-cigarettes between two and five years (69.6%) and 79.8% had moderate or strong intentions to quit. The percent of respondents saying they used e-cigarettes because of the added flavors or for quitting smoking cigarettes were 54.4% and 36.6%, respectively.
Law enforcement officers need to understand the value of collecting e-cigarette and vaping paraphernalia as evidence. Varenicline, perhaps better known by the brand name Chantix, is FDA-approved to help adults to stop smoking traditional cigarettes. But, despite the growing numbers of people who use e-cigarettes, there are no approved medication options to help them to stop using e-cigarettes. It made sense – Altria, the bad actor formerly known as Philip Morris, maker of Marlboro cigarettes, owned a 35% stake in JUUL. With so many adults kicking the cigarette smoking habit, Altria was looking for ways to sustain its financial stability. A French study from the same year found similar results, but also it found that e-cig use among smokers increased the risk of relapse into tobacco use.
In addition, young adults were significantly more likely to use both cigarettes and e-cigarettes than adults 45 and older. Young adults with family incomes of less than 200% of the federal poverty level also were more likely to use e-cigarettes than those with greater family income. Among young adults, men were slightly more likely to use e-cigarettes than women, while those who are white were more likely to use e-cigarettes than young Black adults and significantly more likely than young Asian or Hispanic/Latino adults. The emergence of vaping-related illnesses, which have prompted federal health agencies’ investigations and advisories, underscore the urgency of research. Our study analyzed recent e-cigarette use patterns among US adults to monitor existing policies and guide the development of strategies to address potential health risks and improve public health. A recent national survey showed that about 10% of U.S. youth believe e-cigarettes cause no harm, 62% believe they cause little or some harm, and 28% believe they cause a lot of harm when they are used some days but not every day. In 2014, nearly 20% of young adults believe e-cigarettes cause no harm, more than half believe that they are moderately harmful, and 26.8% believe they are very harmful.
The increase in e-cigarette use (also called vaping) by kids and young people in recent years is a serious public health threat. Since being introduced to the U.S. market in 2007, e-cigarette use among youth has increased to epidemic levels (Surgeon General’s Advisory on E-cigarette Use Among Youth, 2018). The availability of flavored e-cigarettes is one of the most commonly cited reasons for e-cigarette use among youth (Tsai et al., 2018). Given the importance of flavors contributing to use of e-cigarettes among youth, these data briefs build on this previously published article, providing an update on trends in unit sales of e-cigarettes in the U.S. by product and flavor type. These retail sales data briefs are intended to provide information about population trends in sales for participating retailers; they do not include online sales or vape store sales and cannot be used to make conclusions about subgroup purchasing or behaviors. These estimates are based on the information available at the time of publication and may be subject to updates as more information becomes available.

Now that the September 9, 2020 deadline has passed, FDA has begun reviewing thousands of applications to determine if those products meet the public health standard set by the Tobacco Control Act. The emergence of e-cigarettes and the resulting explosion of youth e-cigarette use have presented regulatory challenges. These issues include determining policies to deter youth use, appropriate taxation, clean air regulations, as well as standards for product approval.
The age restriction (21+) has only created an entrepreneurial opportunity. Kids are buying e-juice, filling cartridges and selling them to others not able to obtain product on their own. Indeed, the “vapor” may have a lot more than those five ingredients listed above. Some studies have found it to contain lead, nickel, tin, and silver from the machinery inside the devices along with formaldehyde, manganese, tolulene, and other ingredients linked to cancer, central nervous system problems, and other possible health issues. A 2018 study of e-cig smokers’ urine found at least five of the same carcinogens found in cigarettes. In addition, flavored tobacco products are known to make it difficult to quit nicotine.
Protect their health and their future by equipping yourself with information for this important conversation. In January 2020, the FDA prioritized enforcement against the sale of most candy or fruit flavors in “closed pod” refillable e-cigarettes, like the popular brand JUUL, but exempted disposable flavored e-cigarettes including newer products like Puff Bar. The e-cigarette industry has responded by offering newer products that aren’t covered by existing enforcement guidelines. In July 2020, the FDA issued warnings to e-cigarette retailers and manufacturers, including Puff Bar, to remove their flavored disposable e-cigarettes and youth appealing e-liquid products from the market. In young people, the amount of nicotine needed to establish an addiction has been estimated at around 5 mg a day, or roughly one-quarter of an e-cigarette pod.
International regulation of e-cigarettes varies widely, and, due to the relatively recent introduction of the product category, is rapidly changing. In addition to its toxicological effects on foetus development, nicotine can disrupt brain development in adolescents and young adults [44,45,46]. Several studies have also suggested that nicotine is potentially carcinogenic (reviewed in [41]), but more work is needed to prove its carcinogenicity independently of the combustion products of tobacco [47]. In this latter regard, no differences were encountered in the frequency of tumour appearance in rats subjected to long-term (2 years) inhalation of nicotine when compared with control rats [48]. Despite the lack of carcinogenicity evidence, it has been reported that nicotine promotes tumour cell survival by decreasing apoptosis and increasing proliferation [49], indicating that it may work as a “tumour enhancer”. In a very recent study, chronic administration of nicotine to mice (1 mg/kg every 3 days for a 60-day period) enhanced brain metastasis by skewing the polarity of M2 microglia, which increases metastatic tumour growth [50].
They contain nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin, flavorings, and potentially dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde and various metals. Products containing nicotine or tobacco can’t be legally sold to people under age 21, but the government has faced challenges in regulating sales of disposable, imported devices. Some 10% of high school students said last year they had used e-cigarettes in the previous month, down from 14% the previous year, according to a national survey. About 5% of middle school students said they recently used e-cigarettes. During the ban, the city will study stores that sell vaping products, seek public input, look at what other communities have done and consider zoning changes, said Doug Plowman, planning director.

The study, one of the largest to date looking at the relationship between e-cigarette use and cardiovascular and other health outcomes and among the first to establish an association. The findings were spotlighted in a Popular Science article, which referenced another study led by Paul Ndunda, M.D., also an assistant professor in Internal Medicine at KU School of Medicine-Wichita. “Until now, little has been known about cardiovascular events relative to e-cigarette use,” Dr. Vindhyal, assistant professor in Internal Medicine at KU School of Medicine-Wichita, stated in the ACC release. “These data are a real wake-up call and should prompt more action and awareness about the dangers of e-cigarettes.”
Dr. Panagiota “Yiota” Kitsantas, another researcher involved in the study, emphasized that nearly all e-cigarettes in the U.S. contain nicotine, posing significant addiction risks. “EVP use increases risks of nicotine addiction, drug-seeking behavior, mood disorders, and long-term risks of avoidable premature morbidities and mortality,” he explained. The findings revealed significant and concerning rises in daily usage of electronic vapor products.
Neither the air‐exposed rats nor those exposed to e-cigarette vapor using SS heating elements developed respiratory distress. In contrast, 80% of the rats exposed to e-cigarette vapor using NC heating units developed clinical acute respiratory distress when a 70‐W power setting was employed. Thus, suggesting that operating units at higher than recommended settings can cause adverse effects.
Youth use of tobacco products—in any form, including electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) like e-cigarettes—is unsafe. Such products contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm the developing adolescent brain. Using nicotine in adolescence may also increase risk for future addiction to other drugs. Tobacco use continues to be the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States. There are no safe tobacco products; however, the health risks for tobacco products exist on a continuum, with combustible products such as cigarettes being the most harmful. Decades of research have documented that cigarette smoking harms nearly every organ of the body; cigarette smoke contains nearly 7,000 chemicals, approximately 70 of which cause cancer1.
They have to give us all the chemistry and toxicology data, and they have to identify what’s in the product, including the liquid and the aerosol it generates. We can also do physical inspections of their manufacturing facilities, or remote records inspections, to verify the information in an application. We were prepared both operationally and from a scientific review standpoint.
The company had already suspended sales of most of its flavored pods in stores in November 2018, but continued to sell them online. In September 2022, Juul agreed to pay $438.5 million to resolve allegations brought by 33 states that the company marketed its products to teens by using young-looking models on social media and having launch parties, among other tactics. Young people are more likely than adults to use Juul or other e-cigarettes in the United States, according to the CDC. The lung injury outbreak has been followed by a wave of states and cities ordering e-cigarette bans in their jurisdictions.
Prior to the pandemic, the survey was conducted in person, inside the school classroom. Because of the changes in the way the survey was conducted this year, results of the 2021 NYTS cannot be compared to findings from previous surveys. A plain-language research summary that describes how e-cigarettes work, how safe they are compared to traditional… Table 3 demonstrates the prevalence of current and daily e-cigarette use across age groups and by combustible cigarette use. The prevalence of current e-cigarette use decreased with increasing age and was highest among young adults aged 18 to 20 years (18.1% [95% CI, 16.6%-19.6%]) and 21 to 24 years (18.6% [95% CI, 17.5%-19.7%]) (Figure and Table 3). Because most tobacco use starts during adolescence, actions to protect our nation’s young people from a lifetime of nicotine addiction are critical.

The risk is greater from illegally manufactured or modified vape products, which are more common in states where marijuana remains illegal. Refills come in flavors such as cool cucumber, mango, and mint, which may seem natural and harmless, but a single JUUL refill contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 cigarettes. Some of the ingredients in e-cigarettes could also be harmful to the lungs in the long-term.
A 2018 Truth Initiative survey found that mint was among the top three favorite flavors among young JUUL users aged 12-24, meaning they chose it last time they vaped. New research shows that mint and menthol e-cigarette use among high school users rose from 16% in 2016 to 57.3% in 2019. Among high school JUUL users, 67.5% reported that their preferred flavor was mint or menthol. Another study, conducted before JUUL pulled its other flavors from the market, found that mint was one of the most popular flavors among high school student JUUL users, but that menthol was less so.
The 2019 data revealed that 45% borrowed or “bummed” them oxva vape price, 14% gave money to other people to buy them and 8% were given the products by adults. Young people who use e-cigarettes are also more likely to start smoking cigarettes than their peers who do not vape. The FDA has also reported that, among current youth users of e-cigarettes, 97% used a flavored e-cigarette in the past month.
